What to Wear to Court

When you are summoned for court, you will likely be stressed and anxious. Knowing that you are going to have to answer to a judge is not something that most people are comfortable with. You are not alone. Perhaps surprisingly, one of the biggest concerns that people have is what they will wear.

Knowing what to wear to court can be difficult if you have never been there before. Your goal is to dress professionally, but not to stand out from the crowd. When the judge sees you, the first impression he or she should get is that you are trustworthy. The right appearance can help to ensure that that is exactly what the judge thinks.

When it comes to your appearance, go for modesty. For men and women, a neat, professional hairstyle would be best. Your makeup should be neutral and light. The red lipstick you wear on Saturday nights has no place in a courtroom. That bed-head look you love should be kept at home.

Choose an outfit that falls somewhere between your casual Friday and Sunday best clothes. A pair of pants, or skirt for the ladies, and a shirt or sweater is fine. Men should wear a tie. Your shoes don’t have to be new, but they should have a very low heel, if any, and be clean. Keep tattoos covered as much as you can. Even though body art is more acceptable today, it is still not seen as professional by most judges.

If you have any questions as to what you should wear in front of a particular judge, your attorney is your best source of advice. Though they likely aren’t fashion experts per se, they have been in the courtroom enough to know exactly what the judge is looking for.
