Former Heisman Winner Charged with DUI
We tend to put professional athletes on pedestals. We expect “more” from them and are disappointed when they fail to live up to those expectations. Such was the case earlier in April when Heisman Trophy winner and former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith was arrested for marijuana possession and driving under the influence.
According to reports, Smith’s car did not have a front license plate. Not only that, but a police officer noticed the vehicle to be swerving. Police initiated a traffic stop around 2:30 a.m. and ultimately charged Smith with possession of marijuana, improper display of a license plate and operating a vehicle under the influence.
Dashcam video was obtained by TMZ. In it, Smith can be heard saying, “I’m officer, sir. I’m officer.” Smith recites the alphabet at the request of the officer, and stops at ‘I’. Smith’s remaining field sobriety tests are depicted in the video.
Originally, Smith told the officer that he had not been drinking at all. He also refused a breathalyzer test. He later changed his mind and took the test, measuring 0.143, almost twice the legal limit in Ohio.
After college, Smith spend time in the NFL, playing for the Baltimore Ravens and then the San Francisco 49ers.
