DUI Suspect Arrested with Children in Vehicle

According to police reports, Melvin Fowlkes, 50, was arrested on June 25 under suspicion of driving under the influence. When officers observed Fowlkes Saturn L200 missing a working taillight, they conducted a traffic stop. It was then that they saw the three small children in the back seat. Fowlkes was driving with his three grandchildren, ages 2, 6 and 8.

The officer who pulled Fowlkes over stated that he could smell alcohol about Fowlkes person. The grandfather was also unsteady on his feet and his eyes were bloodshot. He admitted to having had about eight beers during the day. Officers gave Fowlkes a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer. He was placed under arrest and taken to Walker County Jail.

The three children were picked up at the scene by their grandmother. Fowlkes was charged with driving under the influence and endangering a child.
