Student Urges Drivers to Stay Focused on the Road

It takes mere seconds for an accident to occur and change the lives of those involved forever. Such was the case on the Douglasville Highway just before Christmas. A teenager and his friends were in a vehicle at what the teenager describes as the wrong place and the wrong time.

When the car the group was riding in was hit head on, the teen, who had recently taken midterms and was looking forward to Christmas break, became the victim of a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. The teen remains unable to move from the chest down. Once planning on playing college football, the teen has had to alter his vision for what remains of his life.

The teenager says that when the accident first occurred and he became aware of just how injured he was, the only thing he could focus on was not playing football anymore. During and after therapy, the teen’s outlook changed. Now he is not only learning how to become more mobile in his wheelchair, but he is advocating for an end to distracted driving everywhere.

The driver that hit the teen’s group was only 16 and is thought to have been distracted. In most cases that a driver crosses the centerline, say police, the operator was distracted.

The injured teen now hopes that he is able to spread the word about what can happen if people choose to drive distracted, especially in April, as it is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. He says that at least one positive has come from his accident: His friends and family no longer drive while distracted.

Officials say that there has been an increase in fatal accidents in the past couple of years. While many people assume the contributors to the rise are teenagers, the fact is that people between 18 and 60 all have the habit of not giving their full attention to the road ahead.
