Local Teens Seriously Injured in DUI Wreck

There was a serious accident in Dawson County last week and two teens were critically injured. The single vehicle accident took place on Couch Road in the eastern part of the county.

According to reports, Kayla Gourlay, 18, is facing two counts of serious injury by vehicle and a single count of driving under the influence. The teenager has also been charged with seatbelt violations, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving and purchasing/possession/manufacturing/distribution of a controlled substance – marijuana. Georgia State Patrol details state that Gourlay was airlifted after the accident and taken to a trauma center in Atlanta. The teen was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. A passenger in the front seat was also thrown from the vehicle. Neither of the teens was wearing a seatbelt.

There were two other teenagers in the back seat of the car when it lost control. The vehicle traveled down an embankment, overturned several times and came to a stop in a creek. A spokeswoman from GSP said that Gourlay was driving too fast around a curve and was unable to navigate it properly. The two passengers in the back seat were not injured.
