Father Accused of Causing Daughter’s Brain Injury

A two-month old infant suffered skull fractures and torn ligaments on July 4. Her father stands accused of causing the injuries and has pleaded not guilty. The man has been charged with one count of aggravated battery and one count of first-degree child cruelty.

According to reports, police officers were called to a local hospital on the morning of July 4 to investigate a possible assault to the infant. Police were informed that the girl had suffered bruising to several parts of her body, skull fractures, torn ligaments and cracked ribs. The infant is unable to breathe properly due to a brain injury.

The child’s mother told officers that the girl did not have any injuries when she left her in her father’s care. She did say that it was possible that the child had suffered the rib fractures on an earlier date. Family members told police that the child was alone with her father for about an hour. He was at the hospital before the police arrived but left because he was afraid of being accused of causing the injuries.

Police located the man later that night and questioned him. He told police the same thing he told hospital staff: the infant had rolled off the couch as he was changing her diaper. He was unable to recall if the child had hit her head on the table or the floor. The Division of Family and Children Services is also investigating the incident.
