An Update on the Tiger Woods Case

Golf pro Tiger Woods made national news when he was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence in May 2017. According to reports, a toxicology report showed that Woods had several prescription medications in his system at the time of his arrest. Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving on August 9. During his hearing, he also agreed to enter a diversion program. When Woods completes that program, his driving record will be wiped clean.

The toxicology report was made public by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. News outlets obtained a copy of the report. The drugs found in the golfer’s system included:

  • Hydrocodone: This prescription opioid is a generic form of Vicodin.
  • Alprazolam: This drug is more commonly known as Xanax. It is a drug that reduces anxiety and is also prescribed to people with sleep disorders.
  • Hydromorphone: An opioid painkiller that is known by its common name, Dilaudid.
  • Zolpidem: Known also as Ambien, this drug is for sleep disorders.

Along with the prescription medications, Woods also tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. Reports did not indicate whether Woods had prescriptions for all of the medications, including the marijuana. Shortly after his arrest, Woods checked into a facility and announced in July that he had completed the program.

The Initial Arrest

Reports filed after the arrest indicated that Woods was found asleep behind the wheel of his car near his home in Jupiter, Florida. Although he blew 0.0 on a breathalyzer, he failed multiple field sobriety tests. Officers stated that Woods did not know where he was, stumbled as he was taking field sobriety tests, and told officers he was taking both Xanax and Vicodin after his fourth back surgery.

Woods’ back surgeries were widely publicized as they have kept him out of the professional circuit. The latest surgery was his fourth in three years. A part of Woods’ back was fused in this fourth surgery, and the pro is not expected to return to the course this year. The last time Woods won a round of golf was in August 2013.

Woods released a statement through a spokesman:

“As I previously said, I received professional help to manage my medications. Recently, I had been trying on my own to treat my back pain and a sleep disorder, including insomnia, but I realize now it was a mistake to do this without medical assistance. I am continuing to work with my doctors, and they feel I’ve made significant progress. I remain grateful for the amazing support that I continue to receive and for the family and friends that are assisting me.”
